Weird Vegan Diary

30th April 2018
Mood – Exhausted
Events – Daughter has a cold = All hell breaks loose
Focus – Breastfeeding

The perks of creating this diary thing is that I can add to it any fricking time I like!
When a thought pops into my head or observations occur, I can get rid of my ear worms without having to plan out a ‘proper’ blog post or take any specifically fancy photos, only for the whole thing to flop into the abyss when something else happens.
Also, I suffer from pretty gnarly insomnia so… that’s fun.

The possible downside is that I may inadvertently offend someone through my lack of research, seeing as this is literally the mind gunk-bucket section of my website. A way to get the stuff outta there and elaborate on it later if needs be.
So I am totally open to criticism!
Usually when I write blog posts I do a lot of reading first and, on occasion, ask people I trust to look over bits and bobs to make sure i’m not accidentally being a dick, but not with these!
So I am inviting people to discuss what I blurt out in the comments as if this were a conversation, but if there isn’t anything to say, that’s cool… it will serve as another diary entry for me and something for you gals, guys and enbys to read.

So why am I writing a second diary entry in one day?
Well, I just got my 2 year old to sleep (it’s 9:25pm as I type) came downstairs, chucked some vegan quorn sausages in the oven and scrolled through social media.
I came across an awesome pro-breastfeeding post and it got me thinking…

“Anytime. Anywhere. You can stare, I don’t care. I’ll feed my hungry child, here or there, if you don’t like my boob I still don’t care. A Restaurant? A store? It’s boob juice galore! A theater? A museum? But your more focused on trying to see them! Bottle or boob Its all just food. You still think I should cover? You should run and tell your mother. Pull out your phone and take a picture? But I’m the one who’s the problem? Don’t you wish we could all mind our business? That would sure solve them! Think I am disgusting? I could say the same? Think I am playing an attention seeking game? You are wrong because you see, really I am only worried about the comfort of my baby and me!

– Sincerely Whitney, the badass breastfeeder & her badass son fueled by purely boob juice.”

Picture description: This is a pro-breastfeeding activist. She shared this black and white photo of her and her son along with the caption already mentioned. In the photo she is standing in the middle of a supermarket isle. Her baby is in the trolly seat in front of her with his back to the camera. You can see he is breast feeding from his mum and the breast he is feeding from is bare while the other is covered by clothing, the breast that is showing is partly covered by the baby’s head. The woman is standing proudly with her hands on her hips and her head tilted slightly up to the sky.

The topic of breastfeeding is a touchy one.
I honestly couldn’t give a shit about anyone’s opinions if they are of the ‘it shouldn’t be done in public’ kind, that is a shitty opinion.
But I do absolutely stand with those who choose to bottle feed for whatever reason or cannot physically/mentally breastfeed for whatever reason.
It’s a multilayered and complicated issue for some and it’s no one else’s damn business… ok!?
We all know that nutritionally, breast is best.
Sometimes though, mental health and physical health come before perfect nutrition, and bottle feeding is the best option.

Now that is out of the way, I want to talk about those pro-breastfeeders that aggressively push for breast being optimum nutrition and say ‘no excuses, bottle feeding is bad for babies.’
Generally, seeing as vegans only make up 7% of the population in the UK… these types of pro-breastfeeders are not vegan.
I’m sure you can see all the irony and hypocrisy there…

Pro-breastfeeding activism, if done in an intersectional manner, is actually very positive.
It is empowering and supportive of those who want to breastfeed but feel ashamed due to breastfeeding not being seen as normal in society, or at least being seen as some weird kind of sexual attention seeking.
So many people are shamed out of breastfeeding or made to feel uncomfortable breastfeeding in public spaces and end up either going to feed their poor baby in the toilet or not going out at all.
It is a crappy issue that needs activists supporting and being role models for those people and I 100% stand with intersectional pro-breastfeeders.

However… those who shame other people for not breastfeeding because it is the ‘perfect nutrition’ for human babies whilst smugly sipping their tea with the breast milk from a cow in it…
Not cool.
Those who shame other people for not breastfeeding until 4 years old because it is the ‘perfect nutrition’ for human babies and then go make little Jimmy a cheese sandwich made from the breast milk of a cow…
Not cool.
Those who shame other people for not breastfeeding because you are taking away something specifically designed to feed human babies, whilst chowing down on a milk chocolate bar made from the fluid that has been made using fluid specifically designed to feed baby cows…
Not cool.

Rant over.
